Nothing comforts a Muslim, than sipping Rooh Afza during Iftar. First made by Hakeem Hafiz Abdul Majid in 1906 in Ghaziabad. He wanted to create a herbal mix that would help people stay cool in the summer. He selected herbs and syrups from traditional Unani medicine and created a drink that would help counter heat strokes and prevent water loss in people. Drinking a glass of the drink can make you feel refreshed, cool and relaxed in the summer heat.
ROOH-AFZA means Soul Refresher, which is why all the South Asian Muslims end their Ramadan fast with Roohafza. It’s a concentrated rose squash and can be enjoyed by mixing in plain water or it can be made into a refreshing, delicious milk shake. Roohafza is a refreshing coolant and a get thirst quencher during summers. It has also been country’s favorite drink for generations. I could never in a hundred summers get tired of this.
Ramadan is totally incomplete without Roohafza. The summer heat can cause dehydration, especially for people who are fasting since they do not drink water all day. Rooh Afza hydrates the body and gives a good flavour to the otherwise boring water. It contains minerals like sodium, calcium, magnesium, potassium, sulphur and phosphorous which help in reducing dehydration and increasing absorption of water in the body. Made with a lot of herbs, fruits, vegetables, edible flowers, etc. and is also rich in sugar. It provides the body with energy, something very important for everyone during the summer
Though i am not fasting this year but here’s raising a toast to all who my brothers and sisters across the globe who are fasting and praying for Earth to heal soon, MashaAllah!
May God almighty bless you with a life full of joy and happiness. Ameen!
